MILO celebrates World Milk Day with 10 million jump skips

MANILA, Philippines (1 June 2021) – MILO, the country’s favorite powdered chocomalt milk drink, is celebrating World Milk Day by encouraging the entire nation to do 10 million jump skips along with the Department of Education (DepEd) students and Music, Arts, Physical Education, and Health (MAPEH) teachers from all over the Philippines.

World Milk Day is an international event observed every June 1 that recognizes the importance of milk as a global food, and MILO is joining in the celebration of its main ingredient.

“Milk is, in fact, the number one ingredient of our MILO Champion Formula. With this, plus our Champion Energy Nutrients, MILO provides protein and calcium to support bones and muscles, and the energy to reach 10 million skips as one nation,” said Veronica Cruz, MILO Business Executive Officer, Senior Vice President, Nestle Philippines, Inc.

The 10 million jump skips challenge runs for the entire month of June and is a part of the nationwide Jump Rope for the Public School System project, a tripartite partnership between DepEd, the Philippine Jump Rope Association (PJRA), and MILO.

“Mula noon hanggang ngayon, anuman ang panahon, MILO continues to nourish kids with the daily nutritious energy they need and the inspiration to grow with sports, and the life values that come with it. The current situation has left kids prone to be sedentary, so it’s vital that they nurture a daily habit of exercise. Our collaboration with PJRA and DepEd furthers our commitment to keeping kids active and healthy today, especially as they continue to stay at home,” added Cruz.

The nationwide challenge aims to catalyze jump rope as part of DepEd’s grassroots sports development program and properly train students, teachers, and school officials on the basics of the sport. MILO is supporting the initiative by (a) sponsoring jump ropes that DepEd will distribute to 150,000 Grade 4 students and 30,000 teachers across the country, (b) co-creating instructional videos with PJRA that are freely accessible through the MILO Sports Clinics Online (MSCO) programs on YouTube, and (c) sponsoring an interschool virtual tournament with the support of DepEd in school year 2021-2022.

MILO provides kids access to alternative home-based sports through the online programs co-created with its partner organizations. As activities are limited by what can be done indoors, jump rope has become a popular exercise for kids that requires minimal space and helps them stay fit and strong at home. All you need is a skipping rope and the winning energy to keep going. PJRA is the recognized local authority on jump rope, created to promote it as both a competitive sport and recreational fitness activity. The corporation is also sanctioned by the International Jump Rope Union (IJRU), the international governing body for the sport of jump rope/rope skipping.

“Jump rope is a fun activity for kids that can be done anywhere and any way. Studies also show that it can help improve motor skills and promote good mood. We are excited to work with MILO in spreading our love for jump rope and bringing it closer to kids through their online sports clinics,” said Noel Agra, President, Philippine Jump Rope Association.

DepEd is also exploring efforts to introduce jump rope to the schools’ physical education program, conduct physical or virtual training sessions and classes, and organize intra- and inter-school competitions. This is in line with its mission to find innovative ways to make learning fun and conducive for students at home.

“Active kids are better learners because exercise can help improve memory, behavior, and concentration. We’re delighted to partner with MILO once again as they help us achieve one of the goals of the Basic Education-Learning Continuity Plan in promoting the well- being and protection of learners in this new normal. This will increase the physical resilience of learners which will translate to improved academic performance,” DepEd Usec. Tonisito Umali, Esq., Undersecretary for Legislative Affairs, External Partnerships and Project Management Service, stated.
