Pogi Points: The Not-So-Gentleman’s Guide to Looking Good

I'm one of  the book lovers who's enjoying the wonderful world of an artist, graphics master and an observational comedian name Stanley Chi.  He's the co-host of TV5’s Front Act, creator of Manila Bulletin-based comic strip “Chopsticks," and the author of the Suplado Tips 1 & 2.

Just when you think you’ve read it all, a book like Pogi Points comes your way to burst your bubble. Soldiers of love, beware.

Stanley Chi , the genius behind the bestselling Suplado Tips series (read: over PhP2M worth of books sold in just one year) goes out of his comfort zone to write a “not-so-gentleman’s guide to looking good”, as the cover of his newest book, Pogi Points, announces brazenly.
Chi is out to prove he’s not a one-hit wonder after his first humor book, Suplado Tips, underwent reprinting five times in a year. The follow-up Suplado Tips 2 fared just as well, if not better, establishing Chi’s reputation as a legit writer who can sell books to people who don’t normally love reading.

Pogi Points is a collection of tips on how to get ahead in love through strategic behavior. It teaches the naïve boy how to act around his object of admiration (or obsession, whichever applies).

As Chi explains, “Ang pagiging gwapo, inborn; ang pagiging pogi, napag-aaralan (Being handsome is inborn; being pogi is something you can learn).”

Using humor to make his point, Chi teaches precious bits of courtship wisdom to guys who want to win over the girl of their dreams.

Readers aren’t the only ones who noticed Chi’s flair for writing. The Manila International Book Fair  the biggest book fair in the Philippines already in its 33rd year last September, made sure Chi was on board as one of their first-ever endorsers, dubbed “MIBF Bookworms”. During the book fair, Chi joined social activist Carlos Celdran  and fellow comedian-authors  Ramon Bautista  and Tado Jimenez  in an online video campaign to promote literacy.

“Kung dinaan mo sa personality ang isang babae, para mo naring sinabi na pangit ka (If you use your personality to win over a girl, it’s like saying you’re too ugly [to do it any other way])!”  - One Pogi Points pointer says.

Aside from tips on how to score more pogi points, the book contains photo comic strips, serious relationship facts, fun pogi trivia, and self-help lists. It’s a workbook of sorts for the love-struck guy who wants to have fun while decoding the woman he fancies.

Readers get a good dose of laughter from Pogi Points – and who knows? Maybe the single guys might even get a girlfriend.

Meet Stanley Chi, he's friendly not suplado, for MIBF !

Meet Stanley Chi aka Mr. Suplado!
Meet Stanley Chi aka Mr. Suplado, the not-so Philippine equivalent of How I Met Your Mother’s Barney Stinson.

Stanley is an observational comedian, artist and graphics master. He is co-host of TV5’s Front Act, creator of Manila Bulletin-based comic strip “Chopsticks,” the author of best-selling book “Suplado Tips 1 & 2.”

A graduate of Fine Arts major in Advertising, Stanley was an art director for the country’s biggest names in advertising but in 2003, decided to pursue his passion for illustrating comic strips.

Many of Stanley’s followers however came from his conception of Suplado Tips. What was considered as a random and impromptu post on Facebook turned out to be so successful that it was considered as his first ever suplado tip.
He offered more suplado tips and it wasn’t long before people caught on and his FB posts became viral. When Suplado Tips was released, his book gained a cult following.
Stanley Chi and Tado Jimenez
Suplado Tips spawned the creation of the Suplado Society of the Philippines (SSP) complete with its own suplado oath. “Suplado is the new sexy” is the tagline seen on all SSP logos.
This year, Stanley Chi is among the four Bookworms chosen by the 33rd Manila International Book Fair (MIBF) along with tour guide, performance artist and cultural activist Carlos Celdran; comedian, director and actor Ramon Bautista; and comedian, actor, and radio personality Tado Jimenez. MIBF gathered these unique personalities together in hopes of gathering even more people from all walks of life to attend the book fair happening on September 12-16 at the SMX Convention Center.
MIBF is organized by Primetrade Asia, Inc. in partnership with the Book Development Association of the Philippines (BDAP), Asian Catholic Communicators, Inc. (ACCI), Overseas Publishers Representatives Association of the Philippines (OPRAP), and Philippine Booksellers Association, Inc. (PBAI). For details, call 896-0661 or 896-0682, or e-mail bookfair@primetradeasia.com.
