The Itchyworms release new song “Eto Na (Ang Maliligayang Araw)” and a Spotify Music + Talk Show series to mark continued 25th anniversary celebration

The Itchyworms celebrate their era-defining legacy with the release of their new single “Eto Na (Ang Maliligayang Araw)” and the six-part series, Worms Upon A Time: An Itchyworms Podcast as part of the band’s continued 25th anniversary celebration.

The year-long musical treat follows the success of Waiting For The End To Start, which was pressed on vinyl and immediately sold out upon its release, and the launch of “The Life I Know,” the first of its kind in the Philippine stop-motion animation music video, which garnered critical acclaim across the board.

25th Anniversary single

Returning to their brand of melodic pop-rock sensibilities with sharp hooks, bluesy guitar lines, and timeless lyrics, the multi-awarded Filipino band has dropped a call-and-response anthem about hurdling through the difficult times with a more hopeful mindset in life.

According to drummer and lead vocalist Jazz Nicolas, the song documents the feeling of being stuck in a challenging phase for a very long period, while hoping that everything will be fine. “You’re not quite there yet, but you feel that things are moving up a bit,” he emphasizes. “Kel and I call this the dark ages; it’s when all areas of your life seemed very bleak, and you always feel like there's no way out. In this song, you’re not out yet, but you have a feeling that you will be.”

Even before the pandemic happened, The Itchyworms have always wanted to produce a jam song that would make for a strong album opener. Most of their newer tracks gravitate toward the uncertainty of the future or the long-simmering anxiety brought by the lockdown. “Eto Na (Ang Maliligayang Araw),” however, confronts the situation that we’re in with the healing power of a catchy, upbeat guitar-pop tune. It’s a perfect fit for what a 25th anniversary should be: a commitment to represent the band’s music and the history held within it.

When the lockdown slightly eased, the band regrouped into the legendary Big Baby Studios, where some of the alt-rock quartet’s most notable hits were born. “Big Baby was always home to The Itchyworms, especially to Jazz, because this was his father’s original studio in their ancestral home,” lead vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Jugs Jugueta shares in a statement. “I remember recording the first few demos of The Itchyworms there. I also remember Tito Sonny showing us all of his guitars, and Chino and I were just in awe. Now, it has come full circle: Jazz and Peavey and the worms continue Tito Sonny’s legacy, and the fact that we recorded our 25th Anniversary single there means so much to us.”

The Itchyworms reworked the early version of the track by adding lyrics that pay homage to their story together as a group and even referenced some of their old songs in the material. Mixed and mastered by Jazz’s brother Peavy Nicolas, “Eto Na (Ang Maliligayang Araw)” finds the band experimenting with a Moog Little Phatty analog synth and a Yamaha Reface YC, bringing a unique twist on their classic sound. “It's good that we finally got to go into the studio for this,” Nicolas shares the process behind the recording. “We all recorded our instruments live in the studio. and all four of us sang on it.” The Itchyworms’ guitarist Chino Singson adds, “Plus the outro or coda is totally unrelated to the tonal center of the song, but it adds a Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour vibe.”

Worms Upon A Time: An Itchyworms Show

To celebrate the release of their 25th anniversary single, the band launched Worms Upon A Time: An Itchyworms Podcast, a six-part series that explores the long-lasting appeal and impact of their albums in their 25 years of existence as a band. Produced by The Itchyworms and Sony Music Philippines, the show leverages Spotify’s latest format Music + Talk format, a new type of audio experience that brings together music tracks and spoken commentary, wrapped up into one immersive and interactive listening experience.

“I guess this is our version of the Beatles’ Anthology series,” Jugueta reveals. “Because that was the Beatles’ story as told by the Beatles. This show is our story, our history, our legacy as told by The Itchyworms ourselves. Look forward to stories that have never been shared before!”

The Itchyworms will have important guests who will be joining them on the show. Jugueta explains, “This project is very close to our hearts, and we would like to thank Sony Music Philippines for producing it and to Wincy Ong for directing it and to Peavey Nicolas for recording and mixing it.”

The Itchyworms are also set to release a mockumentary that chronicles their 25 years in the music industry and a music video of their self-titled track “Waiting For The End To Start,” whose visual narrative serves as an artistic take on the ‘dystopian future post-pandemic’ life in the Philippines.

The Itchyworms’ new single “Eto Na (Ang Maliligayang Araw)” is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via Sony Music Philippines. Worms Upon A Time: An Itchyworms Podcast is also available on Spotify.

Sitti Gives Inspiration, Hope, and Encouragement through Her Latest Single, Tahan

The Bossa Nova singer is excited about her latest single, Tahan. She wants to give inspiration, hope, and encouragement through her song during this time of global pandemic.

“I wrote Tahan one evening in early May; it was born during this pandemic. I was feeling so much all at the same time - confused, sad, unsure, afraid, and anxious. This pandemic has really shaken me and I often thought about those whose livelihoods were displaced, those who have lost their loved ones, how they couldn’t even give them proper burials and how uncertain all of life truly is. Tahan was also inspired by the book of Psalms - how David just poured out his whole heart to God without holding anything back. Feeling all of these, I let it all go in a song,”  Sitti shares.

Sitti is grateful for the opportunity of having composed a new song. “To be able to write one again, at the same time be healed in the process of writing, is truly a gift especially in these difficult times.” She wrote the first two verses and chorus one evening in early May and then finished the whole song the following evening.

The song was titled Tahan because there is a feeling of melancholy in it.

“Tahan is the only solace after all the outpouring of emotion. Tahan na, magiging okay din ang lahat sa takdang panahon,” Sitti says. “I cried as I wrote the song, cried at the end on my first recording session, cried again as I listened to the first rough mix.”

“The song encourages everyone to tell the Lord everything, every painful experience, every sadness, and after doing so, the song hopes that in the surrendering there could be healing and faith even if our current circumstances might cause worry and unrest.”

Tahan is very different from the previous songs that Sitti had written and recorded. It is progressive meditative, according to her arranger Ria Osorio. Likewise, Tahan is the first inspirational release from the country’s bossa nova queen.

Sitti’s favorite line in the song is O Diyos, palimos ng pag-asa.” It truly reflected the state of her heart then. “How hopeless everything seemed and clinging to Him for hope was the only option to survive.

Noong sinusulat ko itong kanta, walang-wala na talaga iyong pakiramdam ko. Talagang namamalimos na ako ng pag-asa,” she relates.

Daily devotion and prayer keep Sitti afloat during this difficult time. “I’ve learned and continue to relearn to prioritize essentials in my life: my faith and walk with the Lord, my family, and my relationship with myself. These are my top three. I must continue to feed and keep these three relationships healthy. If you’re wondering where my relationship with others/friends stand, they fall under my relationship with the Lord. As the Lord leads and provides, I reach out and help with what I can.”

Sitti has an important message to everyone.

“I hope this song (Tahan) would minister to you and help you get through these trying times. I hope it heals you. I hope it strengthens your faith and encourages you that Our Heavenly Father holds us in the palms of His hands and cares for all of our worries. He will carry us through this pandemic. God bless you. Please stay strong and have hope.”

Tahan is released under Widescope Entertainment and available on all digital platforms like iTunes, spotify, apple music, YouTube Music, Amazon, and Deezer starting November 6.

Boyz II Men serenades Manila in September

Boyz II Men—the ones behind soulful tracks such as “I’ll Make Love to You”, “End of the Road”, “On Bended Knee”, “Water Runs Dry”, “A Song For Mama”, “One Sweet Day” (with Mariah Carey), and “4 Seasons of Loneliness” among other hits, wil serenade the Filipinos who possess an unwavering love for romantic ballads. With the Boyz II Men sereneding in Manila this coming September, Filipinos will more than satisfy this craving.

Ovation Productions, the premier concert promotions and productions company in the country, presents Boyz II Men LIVE in Manila this September 17, 2014 to be held at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The brilliant and immensely talented group is currently composed of baritone Nathan Morris with tenors Shawn Stockman and Wanya Morris. In 2003, past member Michael McCary left the group because of health predicaments. The insistent popular demand in the Philippines for Boyz II Men magnetized the American R&B vocal group to once again grace the archipelago for the fourth time this coming September.

The group is widely popular for touching the hearts of many through their powerful voices, heartwarming lyrics, and splendid harmonies. The group has also done recordings of Motown’s Greatest Hits, a CD of the greatest love ballads, and other covers of popular hits.’

Boyz II Men’s vast success soared to great heights in the 1990s after releasing “End of the Road” which reached the top of the charts and conquered the number one place of Billboard Hot 100 for thirteen weeks. This caused one of the best vocal groups to break Elvis Presley’s record of longevity in the charts. Boyz II Men wowed the world once more by breaking their own record with the songs “I’ll Make Love to You” and “One Sweet Day” (with Mariah Carey), at fourteen and sixteen weeks respectively. The latter track still holds the all-time record for longevity in the Billboard Hot 100.

As one of the most massive names in R&B and a capella, Boyz II Men endeavored to put R&B back into the mainstream as it had been in the 1970s. The group has indubitably put a resonating impact on music and certainly brought back R&B to the popular scene. Boyz II Men garnered an astonishing cumulative 50 weeks on the number one spot of the Billboard Hot 100, a feat that only Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and Mariah Carey have surpassed. This proves how impactful Boyz II Men’s music has become and how the power of their voices has shaped and defined a capella and R&B music.

Catch Boyz II Men live in Manila on September 17, 2014 8PM at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Noel Cabangon gives in to fans’ request in “Acoustic Noel”

One of my fave twits last week is Noel Cabangon's twitter dated January 4!

Late last year, Noel Cabangon asked his fans on what songs they want the singer-songwriter to record for his new album. This new record, produced by Universal Records, contains Noel’s refreshing take on 12 modern classics.

Unlike his multi-platinum albums “Byahe” and “Tuloy Ang Byahe,” “Acoustic Noel” covers OPM classics from various decades.

The album opens with Noel’s take on Ogie Alcasid’s classic “Nandito Ako,” which is also the carrier single of the album. The singer-songwriter’s vocals soars in his rendition of Rivermaya’s “Himala.”

Noel turns sentimental in ballads like Basil Valdez’s “Araw, Gabi,” Aiza Seguerra’s and “Pagdating Ng Panahon.”

He also breathe new life to band hits like Parokya Ni Edgar’s “Harana,” Rizal Underground’s “Bilanggo,” and Eraserheads’ “Huwag Mo Nang Itanong.”

OPM classics also made it to the list – APO’s “Tuyo Nang Damdamin,” and Asin’s “Itanong Mo Sa Mga Bata.”

Noel’s previously-recorded songs, “Nag-iisa, Wala Ka Na” and “Awit ng Bahaghari,” have been given new versions in the album.

1. NANDITO AKO (originally popularized by Ogie Alcasid)
2. PAGDATING NG PANAHON (originally popularized by Aiza Seguerra)
3. HIMALA (originally popularized by Rivermaya)
4. ARAW GABI (originally popularized by Basil Valdez)
5. HARANA (originally popularized by Parokya Ni Edgar)
6. AWIT NG BAHAGHARI
7. MAKITA KANG MULI (originally popularized by Sugarfree)
8. TUYO NA’NG DAMDAMIN (originally popularized by APO Hiking Society)
9. BILANGGO (originally popularized by Rizal Underground)
10. ITANONG MO SA MGA BATA (originally popularized by Asin)
11. HUWAG MO NANG ITANONG (originally popularized by Eraserheads)
12. NAG-IISA, WALA KA NA

Here's one of my Modern English fave !

Moving forward using all my breath
Making love to you was never second best
I saw the world crashing all around your face
Never really knowing it was always mesh and lace

I'll stop the world and melt with you
You've seen the difference and it's getting better all the time
And there's nothing you and I won't do
I'll stop the world and melt with you

(We should know better) Dream of better lives the kind which never hate
(We should see) Trapped in a state of imaginary grace
(We should know better) I made a pilgrimage to save this human's race
(We should see) Never comprehending a race that's long gone by

(Let's stop the world) I'll stop the world and melt with you
(Let's stop the world) You've seen the difference and it's getting better all the time
And there's nothing you and I won't do
(Let's stop the world) I'll stop the world and melt with you

The future's open wide

I'll stop the world and melt with you
(I'll stop the world) You've seen some changes and it's getting better all the time
And there's nothing you and I won't do
(I'll stop the world) I'll stop the world and melt with you

The future's open wide

hmmm hmmm hmmm
hmmm hmmm hmmm hmmm
hmmm hmmm hmmm
hmmm hmmm hmmm hmmm

I'll stop the world and melt with you
(I'll stop the world) You've seen the difference and it's getting better all the time
And there's nothing you and I won't do
(I'll stop the world) I'll stop the world and melt with you

I'll stop the world and melt with you (I'll stop the world and melt with you)
I'll stop the world and melt with you (I'll stop the world and melt with you)
