Keep nurturing your kids’ sense of wonder and creativity at home with Singapore’s online ‘attractions’

Singapore has always been known as a child-friendly destination, with a whole gamut of attractions that inspire creativity and a sense of wonder among the little ones. And while the world is on quarantine, Singapore remains accessible for discovery and learning online, to the delight of parents and kids everywhere.

For one, Singapore Tourism Board has released a drawing tutorial of its iconic character Merli. Kids get to create and at the same time learn more about the country’s representative symbol, the Merlion. People have then been sharing their artworks born out of the tutorial, including Vlogger and Radio Host, Andi Manzano-Reyes and her equally admired girls, Olivia and Amelia, drawing their take on the cute Merli.

And this is just one of the many other online activities that Singapore has made available for the entire family to enjoy and take advantage of these days.

Different attractions—museums, works of nature, and more—are opening their doors, virtually at least, for every family’s choosing.

Art, Science, and more!

Help your child discover ways to experiment, play and create with every day, recyclable materials easily found at home such as cardboard toilet rolls, and rubber bands. Playeum, a center in Singapore that champions children through play holds a live, guided craft session every weekan ideal choice for  regular play dates for the little ones. One can also give the usual storytime a boost and twist, with some puppet play at home with DIY instructions from the group C!puppets.

Get them to know more about the Indian heritage and culture of Singapore through online jigsaw puzzles and charades, even, provided by the Indian Heritage Center. Or let them marvel in the space where art meets science with ArtScience museum’s limited time online offerings—from virtual tours to workshops, and performances.

Into video games? It may not necessarily be a bad thing. Learning also takes place when kids play, and Sentosa has taken the island adventure in the popular Nintendo Switch game, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, so kids can get a glimpse of the exciting experience possible there.

Get around Singapore

If the virtual island experience piques their interest, then let them further explore! Singapore’s famed awe-inspiring green space in the heart of the city, Gardens by the Bay, has launched #StayHomeWithGB, to allow people to still learn about the art of horticulture, along with other edutainment content that are perfect for parents looking for new things to introduce to their kids.

Meanwhile, Google Street View has also made it possible to carry-on sightseeing in the Lion City through the virtual tours of the Singapore Botanic GardensMount Faber Park, and MacRitchie Reservoir.

All these fun activities that Singapore makes available online are but a reflection of the many attractions the island nation has to offer. And even while we are in quarantine, there are still opportunities for kids to pursue creative and imaginative activities. In fact, it might be the best opportunity and time to bond and share precious moments together.

Keep checking Visit Singapore PH for more online activities to enjoy!

Organised by SingEx Exhibitions together with international partner Deutsche Messe, the event is the definitive new trade platform for the 4th Industrial Revolution in Asia Pacific as the region’s manufacturing community gets ready to embark on, and showcase, their readiness for transformational change. The event will welcome more than 10,000 attendees from over 30 countries over three days.

Following its launch announcement in April, the trade platform has since attracted an unprecedented level of support and interest from the regional community. The event space has been scaled up from 15,000 square metres to 20,000 square metres to cater for the overwhelming reception. Companies that have signed on to participate, represent a cross-section of industries, thus ensuring rich on-site representation of the advanced manufacturing community during the event.

With the vast majority of the trade show already fully subscribed, participants can look forward to an array of activities and programmes across multiple industry sectors, including Learning Journeys, Learning Lab, Knowledge Exchange Platform, and Startup Forum, amongst others.

START, SCALE, SUSTAIN – GETTING READY FOR AN IMMERSIVE AND ENGAGING LEARNING JOURNEY

As the pace of each nation’s transformation journey is different and uneven, the event’s unique “Learning Journey” approach is designed to help companies and governments in Asia-Pacific start, scale and sustain their adoption of Industry 4.0 processes and solutions. Based on where they are in their current journey – be it novices, early adopters or trailblazers, this approach is designed to encourage and spur learning, deepen understanding and enable relevant collaborations and ideas to take shape.

While novices to Industry 4.0 will gain better understanding from case studies, recommended solution lists, specially curated explanatory sessions and highlights at the demonstration areas, early adopters will benefit from more advanced coverage of concepts and solutions relating to their phase of Industry 4.0 adoption. Trailblazers and innovators will in turn get to share their adoption experiences with the community through presentations at the conference and sandboxes, as well as contribute perspectives on more advanced topics.

Recognising the event’s strategic importance in spearheading economic progress, the event has also garnered strong support from various local government agencies, with contributions and input drawn from deep community insights. This is reflected in the composition of Industrial Transformation ASIA-PACIFIC’s steering and advisory committees, formed to provide counsel and guidance for the event’s standing, delivery and achievement of regional strategic and business objectives.

Singapore inspires with its new “Passion Made Possible” brand

The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) and the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) jointly unveiled recently a unified brand, Passion Made Possible, to celebrate Singapore and showcase it as a home to many places, people, and experiences that inspire. This new destination brand puts forth Singapore’s unique attitude and mindset: a passionate, never-settling spirit of determination and enterprise that constantly pursues possibilities and reinvention.

Singapore Tourism Board Chief Executive Lionel Yeo introduces “Passion Made Possible” Campaign

“With Passion Made Possible, STB is presenting a brand that can tell a fuller Singapore story beyond just tourism. This brand articulates what we stand for as a country and supports the telling of many stories about this destination and its people. It will allow us to build a deeper and more personal connection between Singapore and our fans and friends, even when they are not actively thinking about travel. This brand is in line with Quality Tourism as it will appeal to the more sophisticated tourists who are seeking more aspirational value propositions in their travel” said Mr Lionel Yeo, Chief Executive of STB.

Dr. Beh Swan Gin, Chairman of EDB, added, “Singapore is making the shift from being primarily an investment-driven economy to one that will be led by innovation. In particular, local and international companies are seeking to create new products, services and solutions that will have a stronger impact in Asia. It is timely to send a strong and clear signal that companies can do this successfully from Singapore and turn possibilities into reality. Singapore and Singaporeans are where we are today because we pushed the limits of what’s possible, and did not allow constraints to hold us back.”

The Passion Made Possible Global Campaign

Following its debut, Passion Made Possible will be unveiled worldwide in various cities throughout Asia-Pacific, Europe and the United States of America through consumer launches, trade events, industry partnerships, and global marketing campaigns featuring campaign films and visuals to bring to life how Singapore is Passion Made Possible.

Parents See Brighter Future For Their Kids With S.A.M.

Parents are known to be a child’s first educators. Hence, it is only natural for them to only want the best for their kids. With the holistic development and character building promise of Seriously Addictive Math (S.A.M.), it is no doubt that it is fast becoming a parent’s preference in supplementing their kids’ capability in math.

Through S.A.M.’s passion in inculcating the right attitudes like love for learning and discovery, discipline, and solving complex word problems, moms Sophia Ann Casipit and Virgilia Cañete narrated how S.A.M. satisfied their meticulous standards when it comes to choosing a learning center that will help their child overcome their math problems.
Before enrolling her 6 year old son in S.A.M., Casipit explained that her child feared mathematics and found it boring. “Seth didn’t want to think and analyse the questions whenever he had assignments and exams in school. But when I enrolled him in S.A.M., I was so happy because he told me that math was fun to learn. He also got so excited every time he would go to S.A.M.” She stressed that her son’s critical thinking and word problem analysis improved. Her son can now add and subtract faster. What’s more, he now loves multiplication, a topic which he totally hated in his third term in school.”
But S.A.M.’s efficiency is not just targeted towards honing a child’s mathematical capabilities. It is also adept in improving a child’s holistic development and character. This fact is also evident in Canete’s 10 year old son Gab who used to struggle in math.
Canete who enrolled her son in other tutorial centers before recounted: “Before S.A.M., I sent my son to a basic tutorial center which also taught Singapore math. But my son’s grade in math got worse so I stopped him from attending the sessions altogether. But when I transferred Gab to S.A.M., I saw a very big improvement with his math subject. I can now see that he is not struggling so much in answering his lessons especially in problem solving”.
On S.A.M.’s learning methods, Casipit said “I love the worksheets on how colorful and illustrated it is. I also like the way it teaches Seth on how to analyze and comprehend the questions rather than just learning math thru repetition”.

On the other hand, Canete also observed that Gab also improved on his reading and problem analysis skills. She proudly added that Gab is now focusing on his lessons more.

With the benefits her son is reaping under S.A.M., Canete said she would recommend S.A.M. to other parents whose kids are also encountering problems with math and their schoolwork, in general. Casipit, meanwhile, thanked S.A.M. for teaching her son, not just math, but also critical thinking and love for independence learning.
She exclaimed: “I am thankful to S.A.M. for being my partner in teaching my son to look at math being my in a different perspective”.
With S.A.M.’s well-polished and well-researched educational framework plus well-trained tutors, parents who put their trust in S.A.M. can be assured that their children are not just being trained to be masterful in math but also to be achievers, in whatever path they take in the future.

Getting Seriously Addicted With Math, Try S.A.M. (Seriously Addictive Mathematics )

Mathematics is considered by many students to be a very difficult subject in school. Math is not an easy subject to love.

But it is not impossible.

How can teachers make math an interesting subject?

The key is teaching kids how to appreciate math by showing them the right fundamentals which they can apply both in a classroom setting or when they are solving math problems on their own.

S.A.M.’s Beginnings in Singapore

The people behind S.A.M are educators from the National Institute of Education in Singapore, led by Samuel Chia and Lau Chin Loong and a support team of Marshall Cavendish consultants. S.A.M or Seriously Addictive Mathematics is an international Singapore Math enrichment program with over 100 centres in 16 countries around the world including USA, Australia and Canada.

According to the TIMSS (Trends in International Maths & Science Study) survey, Singapore Math has been recognized as one of the most successful national programs in the world since 1995. The S.A.M program follows the Singapore Math Curriculum set out by the Ministry of Education and can either be a stand-alone or supplementary math program suitable for children aged 4-12 years old. What makes the SAM approach different from the other Singapore math programs in Philippines is that it is the only international Singapore Math program from Singapore.

Here in the Philippines, it was Enrich Asia which introduced S.A.M. to Filipino families. Enrich Asia is composed of professionals who actively scour the global education arena for new innovative approaches to engaging children and inspiring them to learn.

The Holistic Math Approach of S.A.M.

The S.A.M Approach to Mathematics combines the benefits of personalized coaching, which happens in the classroom in the company of other children with self-learning and self-discovery, which happens when work is taken home. The S.A.M Approach is designed to introduce new concepts in incremental yet sure steps to make learning easier.

During class, the trainers of S.A.M. introduce and explain the concepts and the lesson objective. The child then reinforces and applies this knowledge on his own at home through daily worksheets planned and prepared by SAM. Corrections or clarifications, if any, are done during the session the following week.

The Values Instilled by S.A.M.

The advantage of S.A.M. is that it instills discipline, responsibility and independent learning within your child. These values are not just useful in his math subjects but could prove to be helpful as a child tackles his other school subjects.

S.A.M.’s Approach to Math

More than just rote learning, drill and practice, SAM aims to develop math skills going into the 21st century. These skills revolve around heuristics, logical reasoning, metacognitive understanding, modeling techniques and situational word problems. Rather than focusing on rote learning, quick fixes and maverick methods, the S.A.M program builds on kids’ foundation in Mathematics so that they can learn self-reliantly in their later years in school.

The once a week teachings provided by S.A.M. is a well-thought of process that guides yet steers a child towards learning math independently yet effectively. S.A.M. programs start children with an assessment, so they start at a comfortable point. Here, both their strengths and weaknesses are identified so the mentors will know which to polish or focus on. There are also no memorizations involved in teaching kids how to answer math problems, ensuring that understanding is the essence of every learning objective.

And because what they learn are the concepts, the greater benefit is that the skills taught through S.A.M. stays with a person well into adulthood, where math ceases to be just a subject, and already a way of life.

Singapore Airlines is raising the travel experience to an exciting new level with the introduction of a first-of-its-kind mobile application that offers customers greater control over their in-flight entertainment (IFE) experience - even before boarding the aircraft.

The companion app, which was developed for Singapore Airlines by Mobile Travel Technologies (MTT) in conjunction with Panasonic Avionics, enables customers to review the IFE video and audio content that will be available on their flight, create pre-selected favourites lists, and control the seat-back IFE system – all using their personal electronic devices. The app is now available on iOS and Android tablets, with availability on iOS and Android mobile phones in the second quarter of 2016.

Sample Screenshots of How to Access Companion App

To make use of the app, customers can install the SingaporeAir tablet application on their device prior to the aircraft’s departure. Once on board, they can link their device to the IFE system using the aircraft’s in-flight WiFi network. Connecting to KrisWorld, the Airline’s award-winning IFE system, will then allow for movies, TV shows or music to be launched on the seat monitor, directly from their list of favourites or from the entire media list.

Linking the app to the IFE system also enables the personal device to be used as a remote control, to pause, play, or skip through media content. SIA will be the first airline in the world to enable this on a Panasonic in-flight entertainment system. Customers will be able to multi-task, thereby maximising their experience of KrisWorld, such as by browsing through the index of KrisWorld content on their device while watching a movie on the seat monitor. Customers can even access real-time information on the flight progress and flight path without interrupting their movie viewing.

Current features of the companion app will initially be available on the Airline’s new fleet of Airbus A350-900s, with plans to progressively roll it out to the Boeing 777-300ERs and other aircraft in future.
“With the proliferation of personal mobile devices and the arrival of our new Airbus A350 fleet, this latest innovation will help enhance the in-flight entertainment experience for our customers,” said Singapore Airlines Senior Vice President Product and Services, Mr Tan Pee Teck.
“It offers more information and greater control both on the ground and in-flight, and we are excited to be the first airline in the world to offer such an application to our customers.”
Singapore Airlines’ KrisWorld IFE system offers up to 295 movies, over 470 TV programmes and more than 450 CD albums each month.

TALLEST SG50 BABY SPOTTED IN SINGAPORE ZOO : First giraffe calf in 28 years officially debuts at Wild Africa zone

SINGAPORE, November 2015 — Singapore Zoo proudly welcomed its first giraffe calf in 28 years on 31 August this year. At a statuesque 1.9 metres, he is the tallest SG50 baby, and is a symbol of Singapore soaring to new heights in the years following its Jubilee celebration.

The calf is the first offspring of both mom Roni and dad Growie, which arrived in Singapore Zoo in 2005, from Israel and the Netherlands respectively. The unnamed calf has since grown 40cm, and now stands at 2.3 metres.

During the calf’s first month, he was separated from the rest of the giraffe herd to allow mother and baby to bond, and to ensure the calf was nursing properly. The exhibit was also baby-proofed as a safety precaution before allowing the calf to explore its new surroundings. Existing barriers had to be modified to ensure the baby can explore the exhibit safely.

Gradually, mother and baby were reintroduced to the other two giraffes in the herd—Growie, the father, and Lucy, an unrelated female, which arrived in Singapore together with Roni. The conditioning process took close to three weeks, to ensure the herd would accept the calf. All four are now comfortably sharing the exhibit and can regularly be seen grooming each other to strengthen their bonds.

Aside from the mother’s milk, the calf can now be seen nibbling on leaves and chopped vegetables such as carrots. He now spends his days exploring and running around in the exhibit at the Zoo’s Wild Africa zone. While he’s starting to get used to passing trams and visitors, he will still race back to the safety of mom’s towering presence when faced with something unfamiliar.

“Animal babies are always a cause for celebration as they are a good indication that the animals under our care feel comfortable and secure enough to breed in the environment that we’ve created for them. We hope the calf will tug at visitors’ heartstrings and inspire them to find out more about giraffes, and other animals that thrive in the same environment as these majestic creatures,” said Dr Cheng Wen-Haur, Chief Life Sciences Officer, Wildlife Reserves Singapore.

Although listed as least concern on the IUCN* Red List of Threatened Species, habitat destruction and fragmentation are threats to giraffe populations. To a lesser degree, they are hunted for their meat, coat and tails. The tail is prized for good luck bracelets, fly whisks and string for sewing beads, while the coat is used for shield coverings.

There are plans to conduct a naming contest to find a suitable name for the little one in coming months.

Those visiting Singapore Zoo are encouraged to take photos of the new addition and upload them with the hashtag#sg50babygiraffe.

Visitors can follow updates on the baby giraffe’s development at www.zoo.com.sg/sg50babygiraffe.
