KodeGo bridges STEM gender-employment gap, opens new opportunities for women in tech

KodeGo, the innovative online tech boot camp by Globe's 917Ventures, is charting a new course for women in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields by providing opportunities that aim to address gender disparity in local employment.

The Philippines currently exhibits a 22% gender-based disparity in the STEM workforce, the largest in Southeast Asia, according to a study by professional networking platform LinkedIn. Although women make up 58.8% of employees in non-STEM fields, this figure dramatically falls to a mere 36.3% within the STEM sectors.

KodeGo's mission to democratize education for all is proving to be instrumental in this context, equalizing opportunities for women in these rapidly evolving and highly sought-after disciplines.

The online boot camp has a curriculum patterned after in-demand tech skills and soft skills sought by companies. Short-term tech-related courses include Full-Stack Web Development, UX Design, and WordPress Development.

KodeGo has seen an increasing number of women enrolling in its programs, with the number rising as
KodeGo increased the number of boot camps it offers. Currently, women make up 26% of KodeGo’s student population, with a total of 572 as of June 2023– a testament to increased female interest in traditionally male-dominated fields because of KodeGo’s dedication to offering accessible, gender-neutral education.

"KodeGo is deeply committed to addressing the glaring STEM gender-employment gaps in the country," said Cristina Gervasio, Entrepreneur-in-Residence at KodeGo. "By providing quality training, we aim to empower Filipinos, no matter what their gender may be so that they could be more competitive in the IT industry. We envision a future where the tech world sees equal representation of genders, fostering innovation, diversity, and resilience."

Recognizing that the most significant drop in female representation in the STEM workforce occurs between graduation and employment, KodeGo is intensifying efforts to provide a seamless transition for its graduates. By partnering with top-tier companies, KodeGo ensures graduates receive first-rate education and gain hands-on experience in real-world projects, further cementing their place in the STEM workforce.

As an initiative under 917Ventures, KodeGo signifies the Globe Group's ongoing commitment to improving the caliber of Filipino software engineers and promoting gender equality in the tech sector.

Cold Plasma Technology: Fight off viruses and bacteria

Health experts have always reminded us that prevention is better than cure. When the Covid-19 pandemic hit us, we have taken this reminder more seriously than ever. Prevention meant drastically doing things differently. We spend most of our time at home, doing most things from home, our social interactions have become very limited, and going out and traveling are now restricted to doing what is essential.

We adapted the normalcy of wearing a face mask, a face shield, keeping a safe distance from others, and carrying a bottle of alcohol anywhere, all the time. It is our way of keeping safe, our prevention from contracting Covid-19, other viruses, and bacteria that may cause serious health issues. CoVid-19, other viruses, and harmful bacteria are mostly present in our environment. Experts found that some viruses and bacteria can remain suspended in the air over long distances and longer periods, while CoVid-19 is transmitted through droplets, the virus from the droplets can remain infectious on surfaces for a few hours or even days.

Though we cannot see these health threats, the good news is we are not entirely defenseless against them. Technological breakthroughs in healthcare are giving us an advantage in winning against these harmful bacteria and viruses, and one of the recent wins is in the use of cold plasma technology. An article published in sciencedaily.com reported that researchers from UCLA believe that using plasma promises a significant breakthrough in the fight against the spread of CoVid-19. The article also noted that researchers sprayed plasma on surfaces, such as leather, rubber, plastic, metal, and cardboard, with SARS-CoV-2 cultures and saw the plasma kill the coronavirus on surfaces in less than three minutes, and destroyed most of the virus after 30 seconds. Additional tests also showed that plasma destroyed the virus on cotton from face masks. Researchers believe that the results are an indication of the plasma’s potential in preventing the spread of coronavirus.

What is Plasma?

Plasma is known as the 4th state of matter, the others are solid, liquid, and gas. We do not hear plasma as often, but in fact, it is the most common state of matter in the universe. The sun and stars are almost entirely a ball of plasma. On earth, we see the stars glow in the sky, the ripples in the north and south poles, and the neon signs along our city streets because of plasma.

Plasma is created by heating a neural gas or subjecting it to a strong electromagnetic field. The cold plasma technology is a mixture of positive and negative ions and free-moving electrons. When these ions are released in the air, they attach to harmful pathogens, bacteria, viruses, and odor molecules that cause them to break down and deactivate, then turn these substances into harmless water vapor. Plasma has proven to be effective in deactivating viruses and bacteria and has shown positive results in cancer treatment and wound healing, and other medical applications.

Aller Innovations Technology

Aller Innovations Inc., a Filipino owned company has been at the forefront of harnessing the potential of cold plasma technology since 2016, even before the CoVid-19 pandemic. Working with its development and engineering team based in Beijing, Hong Kong, and Taipei, Aller has developed the use of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) to produce cold plasma. Tests performed in Guangdong Detection Center of Microbiology showed that cold plasma can deactivate 99.90% of viruses and bacteria, and effectively deactivate odors and chemicals from tobacco, benzene, ammonia, acetaldehyde, and acetic acid.

Since day one, Aller Innovations Inc. is focused on creating products that can efficiently and effectively sterilize the things that we use, especially those for children. The first product offering from Aller is the Aller Plasma Sterilizer box that can be used for toys, clothes, food, utensils, and other small items often used.

Recently, Aller Innovations Inc. introduced the Aller Plasma Nano+, a compact and portable air purifier and surface sterilizer to keep our personal space safer anywhere, anytime. It uses DBD technology to produce cold plasma to deactivate viruses and bacteria in enclosed spaces of up to 30 cubic meters or a standard small room.

The air going around our personal spaces-- our home, workspace, inside our vehicles -- where we spend most of our time these days factors in our well-being and exposure to unseen dangers. Recognizing this fact led Aller to further develop their plasma technology to make a compact and a portable device that we can carry around, especially now that we need to be extra careful because of CoVid-19.

Safety and convenience of Aller Plasma Nano+

Aller Plasma Nano+ Sterilizer is safe to use with people and pets inside the room or vehicle because it emits no heat, water, or radiation. It is also very eco-friendly because it does not use any filters or any other secondary pollutants.

It's easy to carry around weighing only 8oz., you can put it inside your car, on the dining table especially when dining out, and on your desk at work. It can run up to 3-hours when fully charged.

Aller Plasma Nano+ is a safer and healthier option to sterilize surfaces and the air in our personal space. It’s a better option than chemicals or other treatments because it is only air and electricity. The plasma technology keeps the surfaces we frequently touch, work, and eat on are kept sterile and free from bacteria or viruses.

We have to keep in mind that our environment is a determinant of our well-being. The quality of the air we breathe and the cleanliness of the surfaces that we use are just as important as the quality of food that we eat, the amount of sleep that we get, and how we manage our stress. Keeping our personal space sterilized, wherever we are, is a necessary preventive measures to keep us and the family we come home to safety.

Pilipinas Shell awards students at NXplorers: The Bright Ideas Challenge 2019

From smart plant-watering systems to coconut powered lamps, 10 innovative solutions to the food-water-energy nexus issues were feted at this year's first NXplorers: The Bright Ideas Challenge 2019 (NX:TBIC) held last November 29 at the Ayala Mind Museum.

Nxplorers is a global education of Shell, introduced to the Philippines in 2019 to involve the youth in addressing the food-water-energy nexus issues. The systems that provide access to the three critical resources are tightly interlinked, water generates power; energy treats and transports water; and both water and energy are needed to produce food.

“Young people today are vital to ensuring the security of these resources tomorrow,” said Cesar Romero, Shell Companies in the Philippines’ country chairman. “At Shell, we believe that by teaching the youth how to critically identify and solve problems, they will be better equipped as future leaders and positive agents of change.”

With an increasing global population, the pressure to maintain stable supplies of food, water, and energy will grow. The nexus highlights a need to better understand the relationships between these resources in order to promote effective collaboration between policy makers and industry leaders.

Through a series of workshops, participants learn to explore the relationships found in the nexus, imagine how changes can affect these systems, and are then challenged to create innovative solutions that protect and maximize resources.

Winning teams

Oriental Mindoro National High School’s Team NX-US won the grand prize for creating a smart watering system that detects soil moisture content and sends users a text message with crop data.

In first place came Gusa Regional Science High School’s Team Marigold, who designed a handheld generator that produces energy by utilizing heat difference through the Seebeck effect.

The second place taken by Philippine Science High School Cagayan Valley’s Team Agribon, who built a drone that can water and spray crops with fertilizer.

Team NX-US took home P100,000, while first place’s Team Marigold and second place Team Agribon took home P70,000 and P50,000 respectively.

Additionally, Bansud Regional Science High School’s Team Antipara and Ramon Teves Pastor Memorial Dumaguete Science High School’s Team A-Team both won merit awards of P20,000.

The other remaining five schools were awarded P10,000 for reaching the final 10, while Team NX-US also won the people’s choice award of an additional P5,000 for winning the popular vote on the competition's online platform.

Equivalent prize money was also given to their schools’ respective STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) funding so that students have increased access to facilities and other resources that will promote better learning.

“Innovative problem-solving needs a good understanding of how change happens,” said Romero. “Shell supports the development of local STEM education, because it will help the youth learn the creative and critical thinking skills needed to envision the future.”

NXplorers is a program that teaches a combination of systems thinking, scenario planning, and a theory of change methodology as a way of showing the youth how to understand and address increasingly complex global problems. It empowers young people to become agents of change by providing them the tools and skills to tackle real world problems.

“This program has shown that we can engage the youth to generate ideas,” added Romero. “Young Filipino’s have so much potential to create positive change for the country, even outside NXplorers.”

For the last 105 years of its operations in the Philippines, Pilipinas Shell has remained committed to the country’s development. As a partner in nation building, the company aims to help spur the development of local STEM education to make the future of the youth.

“Bridging Baby Steps” gives education on infertility and raise awareness on IVF ( in-vitro fertilization)

The advancement of technology in the medical field and availability of improvised technique has given a ray of hope to millions of childless couples across the world.

Merck Philippines, one of the world’s oldest pharmaceutical and chemical company, remains committed to changing lives of couples with fertility problems. As they continuously spreading awareness to help couples who are having problems conceiving, “Bridging Baby Steps” symposium was held at the Shangrila Hotel, Manila on October 21, 2017.

Through the Fertility Awareness Campaign, now on its fifth year, Merck Philippines held the “Bridging Baby Steps,” to continue education on infertility and raise awareness about the in-vitro fertilization (IVF) methods available in the country through seminars and information dissemination.

Infertility, is a disease of the reproductive system defined by the failure to achieve a clinical pregnancy after 12 months or more of regular unprotected sexual intercourse. Not all couples are suffering from fertility problems. Data from a Synovate survey in 2011 shows that one out of 10 Filipinos are suffering from infertility.

At the symposium “Bridging Baby Steps” we have learned a lot about In vitro fertilization treatment that has given a lot of respite to couples from various parts of the country and abroad, who are facing infertility disorders.

Aside from marrying age, educational status, professional goals, and other socio-cultural practices affect a couple’s ability to procreate, infertility can also be traced to issues affecting both the female and male reproductive systems, and medical conditions that compromises the quality of egg and sperm cells.
Dr. Gia Pastorfide talks about Egg freezing
Anthony Marc B. Ancheta

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is the most common and most effective type of assisted reproductive technology (ART) to help women become pregnant. In the simplest description of IVF,  is the process of joining of a woman’s egg and a man’s sperm in a laboratory dish. This procedure involves fertilizing an egg outside the body, in a laboratory dish, and then implanting it in a woman's uterus.

Assisted reproductive technology (ART) involves a significant physical, financial, and emotional commitment on the part of a couple. Psychological stress and emotional problems are common.

As it commonly known as Test Tube Baby, IVF is the process of fertilization by extracting eggs, retrieving a sperm sample, and then manually combining an egg and sperm in a laboratory dish. The embryo(s) is then transferred to the uterus.

Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) treatment procedure enables multiplication of ovarian follicles and facilitates egg cell retrieval. During the process, embryos will be formed outside the body of a female patient and will be transferred once the cultures are successfully formed. Patients who are suffering from severe sperm deficits, blocked fallopian tubes, unexplained infertility, mild endometriosis, and ovulation disorders can be candidates for this treatment.

Fertility medications are prescribed to stimulate egg production. Multiple eggs are desired because some eggs will not develop or fertilize after retrieval. A transvaginal ultrasound is used to examine the ovaries, and blood test samples are taken to check hormone levels.

Eggs are retrieved through a minor surgical procedure that uses ultrasound imaging to guide a hollow needle through the pelvic cavity to remove the eggs. Medication is provided to reduce and remove potential discomfort.

The male is asked to produce a sample of sperm, which is prepared for combining with the eggs.

In a process called insemination, the sperm and eggs are mixed together and stored in a laboratory dish to encourage fertilization. Through this procedure, a single sperm is injected directly into the egg in an attempt to achieve fertilization. The eggs are monitored to confirm that fertilization and cell division are taking place. Once this occurs, the fertilized eggs are considered embryos.

The embryos are usually transferred into the woman’s uterus three to five days following egg retrieval and fertilization. A catheter or small tube is inserted into the uterus to transfer the embryos. This procedure is painless for most women, although some may experience mild cramping. If the procedure is successful, implantation typically occurs around six to ten days following egg retrieval.

The success rate of IVF clinics depends on a number of factors including reproductive history, maternal age, the cause of infertility, and lifestyle factors.

Mr. and Mrs. Basilio shared their story on how blessed they have now two babies after IVF.

There are a number of questions to ask regarding the cost and details of specific centers and fertility programs. To further equip yourself with information of fertility, and IVF in the Philippines, visit Facebook page www.facebook.com/fertilityawarenessphilippines.

Novuhair's Myth and Truth about Hair Chemicals

NOVUHAIR’S INFORMATIVE TRUTH ON HAIR CHEMICALS

We may not be aware that we are unknowingly putting harmful chemicals on our hair thus resulting to general conditions such as migraine, nausea and skin rashes.

The symptoms may be quickly attributed to stress but if you look closer to that hair product you’re using, you’ll be surprise to find the culprit.

Popularity does not equate to safety, some popular brands sold in the market are loaded with mildly toxic chemicals that may be harmful in prolonged use.

Novuhair, Nature’s answer to hair loss, gives you the lowdown on these chemicals to help you with your choices.

Myth: Shampoo must produce lots of lather in order to properly clean your hair.

Truth: Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) is a compound that helps shampoo and other cleaning product in producing foam and bubbles. Though it may effectively remove hair build-up, it can also strip off essential oils that is needed to keep your hair healthy.

*********

Myth: Parabens has an anti-bacterial compound benefits that outweighs the harm.

Truth: Parabens are basically used to prolong the shelf life of hair and cosmetic products mostly for its antibacterial purpose. Symptoms that are related to over exposure to parabens are Atopic Dermatitis and Rosacea. Further studies also show that use of products with parabens accelerate skin damage and aging related to sun exposure.

*********

Myth: My hair smells terrific! I love the perfume scent on my hair product.

Truth: A nice whiff of perfume might not be harmful but the fragrance that is mixed in your hair product might have come from harmful substances from highly toxic ingredients which can lead to Allergic reactions and mood swings. That perfume is better off somewhere else.

*********

Myth: Hair products that promise straightening and smoothening effect use non-toxic Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate as a natural preservative.

Truth: Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate is a substance used in making your hair soft and bouncy, although it is considered natural preservative, also releases formaldehyde which can lead to skin and eye irritations. Prolonged use may also affect your immune system.

Use of some of these chemicals combined may also result to hair loss and other hair problems, thus, it is important to be an informed consumer.

A lot of new products have saturated the market hence, read the labels for fine prints before buying.

Beauty Break : CUTERA Treats Bloggers to Premium Face and Body Laser Treatment

On women's beautification adventures and in the interest of science, most women nowadays have tried a variety of health and beauty treatments that I have heard and seen demonstrated on TV.

Laser treatments can be used for a range of issues: from hair removal and ageing skin to acne scars and unsightly veins. Because of the wide-ranging benefits, laser is becoming increasingly popular.

You’ve probably heard about these treatments, too: laser hair removal, vein eraser and cellulite-reduction treatment. For me, big questions always are: Are they safe? Do the treatments work? How uncomfortable are they? Are the results lasting? Are they affordable?

CUTERA, the preferred laser treatment brand of top beauty doctors here and abroad invited some beauty and lifestyle bloggers for a “Beauty Break” that allowed them to experience the CUTERA difference in face and body aesthetics.

Beauty and Lifestyle bloggers experience "Beauty Break" on October 5, 2016 held at Aruga Hotel by Rockwell, Waterfront Drive, Rockwell Center, Makati City.

The event showcased not just the premium quality of the CUTERA face and body laser treatment but also triggered the company’s call for better awareness of the public when availing of laser treatment services.
“CUTERA is a premium brand of face and body treatment from the US, engineered and designed to provide instant results and guarantees a safe and non-invasive procedure,” Liz Endrinal, Head of Therapeutic Sales of Cutera Philippines, said.

CUTERA Philippines has a formidable lineup of laser treatment machine that addresses the following face and body concerns:
  • Enlighten that helps erase and lighten benign pigmented lesions such as melasma and sun spots. It is also the Cutera power machine for effective tattoo removal
  • Excel V is the Cutera machine that takes away ages of your face as well as addresses leg veins, freckles and brown spots
  • The Cutera XEO machine provides instant results versus inflammatory acne, brown spots for elderly people, leg and facial veins, angiomas and rosacea or the diffused redness on the face
  • Cutera’s truSculpt machine employs the stamp motion in deep tissue healing that delivers effective fat reduction.
  • Titan is the go-to Cutera machine for natural lifting, skin tightening and skin laxity

Exquisitely Engineered, Efficiency Delivered

With skin, body, and facial treatments that have emerged largely in the Metro, it is anxious for us to easily trust clinics and even the process itself.

CUTERA remains loyal to define the forefront of medical aesthetics with devices exquisitely engineered to deliver the highest level of performance, safety, and efficacy—providing a wide range of Face and Body medical aesthetic applications, with results that drive patient satisfaction, and inspire trust to medical aesthetic practitioners in the Philippines.

CUTERA, officially distributed in the Philippines by MEDEV Medical Devices Corp., continues to emerge in the Philippine face and body healthcare industry with top caliber names such as the Dr. Aivee Medical Clinic, Nisce Skin N’ Face Clinic, Belo Medical Group, Makati Medical Center, Asian Hospital, DLSU Medical Center, Skin and Cancer Foundation, among others.

“With CUTERA and the partnered clinics present in the Philippines, we make sure that our equipment promise and deliver results, justified by our growing “CUTERA Cult” that have seen these specific results,” Endrinal said.

CUTERA also proudly shared that the government hospital, East Avenue Medical Center, is now equipped with a CUTERA XEO multi-platform machine with pearl fractional that immediately resolves problems on acne and box type scars and resurfacing of the affected facial area.

CUTERA has also penetrated Baguio, Davao and Bicol with the installation of CUTERA XEO laser treatment machines in specialized clinic in each of the said provinces.

`Say no to refurbished machines’

CUTERA also used the opportunity to reinforce their call against second hand and refurbished laser treatment machines that pose a great risk to patient’s safety.
“There are a lot of horror stories that involved 2nd hand and refurbished laser treatment machines, the most common of which are burns and blisters.  That is why we have been espousing and promoting patient education by choosing only brand new laser treatment machines of CUTERA to ensure their safety and to guarantee instant and effective results,” Endrinal affirmed.
She adds that 2nd hand and refurbished laser treatment machines are not regularly calibrated as it is supposed to, thus, preventing it from emitting the required laser energy to treat patients.
“That is why if you stumble on a clinic that offers laser treatment machine at an unbelievably cheap rate, be very scared. Either you won’t get the results that you want or worse, you will get hurt in the process,” Endrinal adds.

To know more about the different face and body laser treatments of Cutera, visit their official Facebook account at https://www.facebook.com/CuteraPhilippines
