5 creative ways to make after-school activities more fun

Kids spend most of their weekdays in school. From classes to extracurricular activities, they deserve a fun treat when they get home, especially after a long day. This is the perfect opportunity for parents to get creative with after-school activities as a reward for kids doing an awesome job in their classes and finishing their assignments on time.

If you need ideas to make your kids’ after-school routine more fun and rewarding, here are some suggestions:

#1 Get crafty and make a calming jar

A calming jar is a sensory item that can help relax anyone that shakes it. You can easily make this with your kids by pouring glitters, hand soap, and watercolor in a clear jar – then mix! This will create a shimmery mixture that can be compared to a snow globe when shaken. This is a great artsy activity that you can do in just a few minutes.

#2 Sing your heart out

Music can uplift anyone’s mood. Once your kids are done with their homework, you can play their favorite songs on Spotify or put on lyric videos on YouTube to have a videoke party in your sala as a treat to them. To make it more fun and exciting, dress up as your favorite singers, so you’ll really feel like you’re in their shoes. Dancing is also highly encouraged!

#3 Get active and create new games at the park

Nothing beats park dates after school. Take your kids to a nearby park where you can spend time at the playground before going home. You can also organize a scavenger hunt but with a twist where kids are challenged to find as many items in different colors as they can. And by the end of a timer, the one with the most number of items wins. This can help kids de-stress and feel recharged before they start on their assignments and go back to school the next day.

#4 Whip up a fun, yummy drink

Chocolate is always a great reward after a long day or week in school. An easy recipe that you and your kids can do at home is the Funtasy Mallows Fudge Freeze, a colorful shake made with Swiss Miss Funtasy Mallows. The product is made with premium chocolate and real milk, topped with colorful marshmallows. Turn the day around and level up the fun with this snack time drink.

Make after-school activities more fun and rewarding for your kids with Swiss Miss Funtasy Mallows

Here’s what you need to make a Funtasy Mallows Fudge Freeze:

INGREDIENTS (Good for two servings)

2 packs Swiss Miss Funtasy Mallows

       ½ cup water

       2 cups vanilla Ice cream

       1 cup ice

       Marshmallows

       Whipped cream (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS

Dissolve 2 Swiss Miss Funtasy Mallows in ½ cup water

Add 2 cups ice cream, 1 cup ice, and Swiss Miss Funtasy Mallows mixture in a blender

       Add marshmallows in a glass

Pour Funtasy Mallow Fudge Freeze mixture in glass

       Add toppings

#5 Indoor movie nights made fun

Watching a movie together at home is a great bonding activity for the whole family. Decorate your sala with fairy lights and movie posters to add more ambiance for the best indoor movie experience. Get your snacks and Funtasy Mallow Fudge Freeze, and get cozy on the couch while enjoying your chosen flick. This is a fun way to reward your kids with an exciting viewing experience after school days.

These after-school activities are a great way to let your kids have fun before another school day, and also appreciated for their hard work. Your kids will certainly appreciate every treat that you give them.

Make them more special with a delicious drink made with Swiss Miss Funtasy Mallows, like the Funtasy Mallows Fudge Freeze. This will surely add a creative and refreshing spin to rewards.

Tips and Recipes to Elevate Your Home Cooking with Ninong Ry- Recreate each recipe at home with the help of GLife’s curated brands and merchants

Nothing beats the comfort of having a home-cooked meal, and if there’s someone who knows a thing or two about preparing delectable dishes for the family, it’s Ninong Ry. He brings his special recipes to life with the help of GLife, sourcing all the best ingredients and kitchen gadgets to ensure his dishes are always outstanding.

A feature on the GCash app, GLife brings together a curated line-up of merchants and services into one dashboard to allow users to shop for what they need effortlessly in just a few quick taps.

Whether he’s looking for the freshest vegetables and meats or he’s on the hunt for new equipment to level up his kitchen, Ninong Ry finds it all on GLife. Take note of these tips from everyone’s favorite ninong, and get ready to elevate your home cooking!

Tip 1: Great food needs great cookware, and when you plan to make steak at home, you need a sturdy cast iron pan.

A nice, tender steak doesn’t require a trip to a fine dining restaurant; all you need is a cast iron skillet at home to cook a perfectly delicious and juicy steak. A cast-iron pan evenly distributes and retains heat, so when you cook steak, the entire surface takes on a beautifully caramelised sear.

“Lahat ng gusto mong i-sear, masesear mo ng maayos dito kumpara sa ibang material,” explains Ninong Ry. “Mas mataas ang searing, mas masarap ang luto, mas mag eenjoy ang pamilya.”

A nice cast iron pan may be purchased for PHP 630.00 from Rampage City on GLife. Through this tried and tested technique using a cast iron pan, you can begin having epic steak nights at home!

Tip 2: Make the smart choice with your sandwiches by grilling them. You can even get creative and grill with a waffle iron!

“Madalas ginagamit ko ang waffle iron ko pag sawa na akong mag pancake. Same mixture, babawasan lang ng liquid, pwedeng pwede nang maging waffle. Ginagawa ko din minsan na sandwich bread yung mga waffle na gawa ko para maiba naman,” shares Ninong Ry.

With a waffle iron, the outside of your sandwich becomes crispy, but the centre remains soft and gooey, especially when you add lots of cheese! Ninong Ry recommends the Sonifer SF-6043, a portable waffle iron that costs only PHP 674.00 on GLife.

Tip 3: Need help in picking the right kind of beef for different dishes? Get the finest Sirloin or Salpicao cuts + homemade steak sauce from Chingolo Deli.

Chingolo Deli is Ninong Ry's go-to deli for meats since they're sourced from grass-fed herds. Their meats are hormone and antibiotic free, so they’re not only delicious, but also healthier for you and your family.

The Bolzico meat at Chingolo Deli is a 100% Argentinian certified grass-fed Angus beef, but they also have a large selection of meats from which you can prepare a superb sirloin dish or beef salpicao dinner. They also sell homemade steak sauce to go with their prime steak cuts. The best part? They’re all available on your GCash app thanks to GLife!

Tip 4: Make the smart choice for more savings when shopping and choose PureGo for the freshest and most affordable grocery finds.

With thousands of products from hundreds of recognized and trustworthy brands, PureGo makes online grocery shopping simple. “PureGo is incredibly convenient,” Ninong Ry promises. "Kumpleto sila sa grocery goods, kaya di na naming kailangang lumabas, and sure na sariwa ang mga karne at gulay nila, kaya tiwala ako na maganda.”

You can access PureGo on GLife via the GCash app, and select your desired groceries. Payments may be made through a variety of methods, including GCash, and your products will be delivered to your home the same day, allowing you to enjoy your fresh buy and prepare wonderful meals without the trouble of grocery shopping!

With these tips, you can now excitedly level up your home cooking game. Using ingredients from PureGo and using your new cast iron pan and waffle iron from GLife, here are two recipes from Ninong Ry that you can try out!

Chef Tatung’s “Simpol the Cookbook”, collaborates with NutriAsia

If celebrity chef, restaurateur, best-selling cookbook author, and popular YouTuber Chef Tatung Sarthou were to single out one word that drives his culinary journey, that would be “simpol”. Chef Tatung, after all, has spawned a huge fan base of homecooks who all share his creed, “Kahit sino kayang mag luto basta simpol.”

Chef Tatung’s “Simpol the Cookbook” online cooking show has over 1 million subscribers between YouTube and Facebook. In Simpol the Cookbook, Chef Tatung presents over 101 recipes that are easily executed using familiar ingredients and basic kitchen equipment.

This approach to cooking has defined Chef Tatung’s success through the years. His first neighborhood restaurant in Quezon City was famed for its hearty and delicious offerings. Chef Tatung quickly branched out with several casual dining restaurants that trained the spotlight on the best of Filipino cuisine, including the Tausug-inspired, blackened and coconut-infused Chicken Piyanggang.

The popularity Chef Tatung garnered from his successful restaurants led to a gig as a resident chef for ABS-CBN’s Umagang Kay Ganda. His stint at the early morning show inspired him to master his craft and develop a deeper appreciation and love for simple home cooking.

Chef Tatung soon gained international recognition for his efforts. He was one of the highlights of the Asia Madrid Fusion 2017 event at which he spoke at length about the undiscovered cuisine of Mindanao. One might also recognize him from the popular Netflix series Street Food for which he was handpicked as a resource speaker to discuss the evolution of street food in Cebu.

Chef Tatung currently hosts the popular online cooking show “Simpol,” which between Facebook and YouTube has over 1 million subscribers and counting. His passion for teaching and sharing wisdom knows no bounds.

“I really want to be known more as an author, a teacher, and an advocate. Being a chef is just a stepping stone for me to be able to do what I want to do, to understand what I want to understand,” said Chef Tatung. “There are more important things, such as food security and national identity.”

Despite the attention from around the world, however, Chef Tatung has never once lost sight of the importance of Filipino culture.

“Food is incredibly powerful in how it speaks to our values as a nation and a people,” says Chef Tatung. “It is important then to continually pass on our knowledge about cooking in a clear and understandable way to reach as many people as possible. Making cooking ‘simpol’ and less intimidating allows the story behind each dish to thrive in the hearts and minds of Filipinos everywhere.”

No surprise, then, that “Simpol” is the title of Chef Tatung’s soon-to-be-launched fourth cookbook, a venture for which he collaborated with NutriAsia, makers of Filipino homecooks’ well-loved food condiments. Several of the prized recipes utilize NutriAsia products such as Datu Puti, Silver Swan, UFC, Golden Fiesta and Locally, highlighting these as cornerstones of the Filipino culinary experience.

Chef Tatung has been a lifelong advocate of how food can speak to the values of the Filipino people. Celebrity Chef Tatung Sarthou makes cooking easy with recipes in his fourth book,
“Simpol the Cookbook”.

In Simpol the Cookbook, Chef Tatung presents over 101 recipes that are easily executed using simple, familiar ingredients and basic kitchen equipment. The featured dishes include cherished Filipino classics for every occasion and a slew of recipes that merit the tag ‘heirloom’ because these evoke images of beloved family elders lording it over a hot and smoky kitchen.

The recipes in Simpol the Cookbook were perfected and carefully catalogued by Chef Tatung over the years and are now served up as parts of a handy kitchen companion for both seasoned and first-time cooks. Hearty and delicious dishes he enjoyed as a young boy growing up in Cebu are there so you may replicate these in your own kitchen with simple, easy-to-follow steps.

Simpol the Cookbook strips the cooking process of the flourishes and fancy hype one might see in foreign cooking shows and grounds the activity in the everyday Filipino’s experience. Clearly, Chef Tatung has made it his life’s mission to make cooking as “simpol as A-B-C.”

It’s a sentiment that NutriAsia shares with all of us. “We are incredibly proud and excited to have collaborated with Chef Tatung Sarthou on his latest project, Simpol the Cookbook,” says James Lim, NutriAsia’s Corporate Marketing and Communications Head. “As a Filipino company, NutriAsia has always advocated for the joys of simple, everyday home cooking. We believe that anyone can cook special, great-tasting meals. With the pandemic keeping all of us at home, we have all had to become home cooks ourselves. This has made all of us hungry for new and exciting recipes that can be done from our own kitchens. There’s no better way to learn than from someone with the immense talent of Chef Tatung.”

Good eating starts in every person’s home. With the masterful guidance of Chef Tatung and the uniquely Filipino flavors of NutriAsia condiments, let Simpol the Cookbook brighten up your mealtimes for years to come.

Cooking up steps to self-improvement

Ever notice how we can all learn to make a PowerPoint presentation by the sixth grade, but only a handful of students that age knows how to make scrambled eggs? By the time we release students into the real world, they are fully equipped to handle high-stakes jobs, but less able to do simpler tasks- make a functional budget, change a flat tire, or make a healthy, tasty dinner.

Young professionals today are not only eating out more, but also leaning heavily on the convenience of takeout. But that leads to a whole different set of problems. Not only is it more expensive to eat out, but when you live on meals made for you by other people, you tend to gravitate towards the unhealthy- fast food, deep-fried, overly sweet or salty, or loaded with saturated fat.

That can lead to weight gain and all the health problems that come with an unhealthy diet.

Skills to a healthier, happier life

However, a lot of men and women have decided that enough is enough and taken matters into their own hands, learning how to do the basics that have been forgotten while growing up.

For a lot of them, workshops and classes are the solution of choice. There are entire courses of cooking lessons geared towards the younger set, looking to sharpen their skills in the kitchen. Urban professionals who seek a more affordable way to eat lean, young parents looking for ways to improve their children’s nutrition, and single men and women seeking to impress potential mates flock to these courses.

As much as learning the basic skills such as the difference between boiling and braising, these students are learning of the importance of choosing better ingredients, items that are not only convenient, but are healthier in the long run, such as Gold Seas Tuna Chunks.

Substitutions for convenience help ease the transition from relying on takeout to cooking at home. For example, frozen vegetables are a better option than canned vegetables when one can’t get fresh greens. The same goes for fruits, as canned fruit has a lot of added sugar. Canned tuna, on the other hand, is much easier to get than fresh tuna for the man who is always on the go, and it keeps for much longer. Kept as a pantry staple, it provides an excellent go-to protein that is leaner and healthier than red meat.

Tuna is a great lean meat option. Each serving is packed with nutrition, including muscle-building and brain-boosting Omega-3 fatty acids; Selenium, a rare mineral that’s also a powerful antioxidant; as well as vitamin C, zinc, and manganese, all of which strengthen your immune system.

What’s more, tuna lends itself to a multitude of dishes which are a breeze to make. Even if you’ve never really cooked a full meal in your life, you can stir together tuna, some greens, and some onions and make a decent salad!

Sustainably sourced yellowfin tuna is packed into every can of Gold Seas Tuna Chunks, which come in two sizes- Solo (90g) and Sharing (185g). The former is perfect for a quick, healthy meal for one, while the latter is great for creating something tasty to share with friends and loved ones.

Gold Seas further prides itself on providing a variety to flavors to keep your tuna based dishes interesting as well as nutritious. There is Yellowfin Tuna Chunks in Olive Oil, Yellowfin Tuna Chunks in Olive Oil with Chili, Tuna Chunks in Herb and Garlic, Tuna Chunks in Lemon and Pepper, and Tuna Chunks in Mild Indian Curry. If you’re a purist or if you want to make a dish with only the pure taste of tuna, there’s also Gold Seas Yellowfin Tuna Chunks in Springwater.

If cooking up healthier, tastier meals sounds like something you would like to learn yourself, we’re including a few easy tuna-based recipes which Chef Rosebud herself teaches to some of her students who would like to level up in the kitchen.

Check them out and try your hand at preparing these dishes yourself sometime. You may find that it’s easier than you thought, and tastier, too!
