MERALCO ramps up campaign on lifeline rate program

The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has strengthened its information campaigns in different cities and provinces across its franchise area to help increase the beneficiaries of the lifeline rate program. Through its barangay caravans, the company is also accepting on-site applications to encourage members of Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) and other qualified marginalized households to apply.

Pfizer supports PRC’s COVID-19 efforts


In 2020, Pfizer and Pfizer Foundation announced their commitment to donate $40M for worldwide relief efforts for COVID-19 through international non-government organizations (NGOs) and partners. Among those chosen beneficiary organizations was the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) for its efforts in relief operations and for taking the lead in performing more than one million RT-PCR tests in the Philippines. Last January, Pfizer Philippines formally turned over a $100,000 (P5 million) grant to PRC to support its COVID-19 relief efforts and projects. The virtual turnover event (in photo) was attended by Pfizer Country Manager Andreas Riedel, Pfizer Public Affairs Director Noel Borlongan, PRC Chairman and CEO Senator Richard Gordon, PRC Secretary General Elizabeth Zavalla, PRC Biomolecular Laboratories head Dr. Paulyn Ubial, and American Red Cross Country Representative Shir Shah Ayobi.

Maxicare inks partnership with Manulife

Maxicare Healthcare Corporation, the country’s leading healthcare provider, recently formed a 2-year partnership with Manulife Philippines, the largest insurance company in the country, to help make lives of Filipinos better through easy access to financial and health products. Championing the era of open banking


Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation (RCBC) has become the first local bank to advocate and implement open banking in the country, affirming its position as a digital trailblazer in the financial industry. In a talk on digital transformation delivered during the recent Philippine Digital Convention at the Marriott Hotel, RCBC Chief Innovation and Inclusion Officer Lito Villanueva said RCBC is pushing for open banking to power rural banks, cooperatives, microfinance institutions (MFIs) and FinTech players' transactions via open application programming interfaces (APIs). It reduces barriers to innovation, eliminates the big banks' "walled gardens", and enables small players to be part of the National Retail Payments System (NRPS) ecosystem.

MERALCO Rates Down For Third Consecutive Month

The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) announced a Php 0.11 per kilowatthour (kWh) reduction in power rates this month. This downward adjustment amounts to around Php 21 in total savings for a typical household consuming 200 kWh per month and represents a total rate decrease of P0.57 per kWh since May 2019. Meralco Public Information Office Head Joe Zaldarriaga (in photo) explained that the over-all rate reduction this month can be attributed to a lower transmission charge, as well as a decrease in other charges. Essilor volunteer tops optometrist board exam


Morel Paul Abesamis, Essilor volunteer for eye health care campaign and graduate of Manila Central University (MCU), successfully topped the 2018 Optometry Licensure Exam with a rating of 87.23%. Conducted by the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC), this year’s Optometry Licensure Exam recorded 188 successful passers, out of the 222 who took the exam. Last year, Essilor scholar Jennifer Parmerola, who is also a graduate of MCU, also topped the 2017 Optometry Licensure Exam. Sta. Ana hailed as KTM Dukehana Philippines champion

Luisito Sta. Ana bagged the championship in the highly anticipated KTM Dukehana finals held in Cebu City. He will represent the country in the Dukehana Asia Finals 2018 and compete against other Asian champions including those from Thailand, China and Taiwan. Sta. Ana topped the race with a best time of 1:15.67. In second place is Visayas Champion Banjo Monilar who finished in 1:24.11 while Mindanao Champion Tedd Marante finished third with a time of 1:26.32. The finalists were faced with a challenging street course that tested their preciseness in driving and fast maneuvering skills. KTM Dukehana is a motogymkhana time trial sport event were riders maneuver through traffic cones and other obstacles in the shortest time possible with the least number of penalties. This racing event encourages amateurs and expert riders to show off their ready-to-race skills with their KTM motorcycles.

Globe, Facebook launch “Digital Discernment” module to promote responsible digital citizenship


Globe Telecom and Facebook recently launched a new “Digital Discernment” workshop, coinciding with Safer Internet Day on February 6, 2018. 

More than 100 public school students and teachers from Manila participated in the workshop, which included topics to teach people how to think critically online, and identify credible information from questionable information. Content includes practical tips on how to verify and examine online sources, and identify facts from opinions. The workshop promotes responsible digital citizenship among teachers and students in public and private schools across the country under the “Digital Thumbprint Program” or DTP. AXA Philippines stages first Youth Basketball Clinic

City of Dreams Manila Foundation donates to Paranaque City’s health program

Signing the Memorandum of Agreement are, from left: Geoffry Andres, Property President of Melco Resorts Leisure (PHP) Corporation, which operates City of Dreams Manila; Clarence Chung, President of the foundation; Parañaque City Mayor Edwin Olivarez; and Armin Raquel-Santos, Vice President of the foundation. Witnessing the signing are Marissa Tomacruz-Academia, City of Dreams VP-Legal and the foundation Corporate Secretary; Alberto Regino, Jr., Chief of Staff of PAGCOR’s Office of the President and COO; and Parañaque City Public Information and Special Services Officer, Mario Jimenez.

A tri-party agreement was signed by the foundation of City of Dreams Manila, Melco Resorts Leisure (PHP) Corporation, and the City Government of Parañaque for the monthly donation of P1 Million or a year’s donation of P12 Million to Parañaque City by the luxury integrated resort’s foundation. The donation, which is in keeping with PAGCOR’s requirement for casinos to implement and fund projects for Heritage, Education, Environment and Health Programs, will be in aid of Paranaque City’s health program consisting of the procurement of medicines, medical supplies and equipment for government-maintained hospitals.
