Eula Valdez, Allen Dizon major winners at the 38th Gawad Urian Awards; Nora Aunor given the Lifetime Achievement Award

The winners of the 38th Gawad Urian Awards have been announced by Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino and Cinema One held Tuesday, June 16 at the ABS-CBN Studio 10, Sgt. Esguerra, Quezon City.

Hosted by Angelica Panganiban, Robi Domingo, and Butch Francisco, the awards night began with a shadow play performance from Asia's Got Talent champions El Gamma Penumbra.

The 38th Gawad Urian Awards night also celebrated the works of Nora Aunor, who was recognized with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Lav Diaz's Mula Sa Kung Ano Ang Noon Mula sa Kung Ano ang Noon (From What Is Before) won several awards, Best Picture, Best Screenplay, and Best Editing and including Best Director for Lav Diaz.

37th Gawad Urian Awards winners announced

The Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino continues to honor and give credit to excellent Filipino film makers who dared to be non-traditional. Last night (June 17, 2014), at the 37th Gawad Urian Awards held at the Dolphy Theatre in ABS-CBN compound, the MPP revealed the names of 2013′s best films and performers.

Most of the awards were captured by noted indie films, with “On the Job” as the only commercially produced film to be recognized.

Here’s the complete list of winners for the 37th Gawad Urian Awards:

Best Picture: “Norte, Hangganan ng Kasaysayan”

Best Actress: Angeli Bayani – “Norte, Hangganan ng Kasaysayan”

Best Actor: Joel Torre –  "On The Job"

The nominees for the 37th Gawad Urian Awards revealed; Piolo Pascual and Bianca Gonzales will be the host on June 17

The nominees for the 37th Gawad Urian Awards have been announced this morning, April 29, 2014 held at the ELJ Bldg. Abs-Cbn, Quezon City.

Three members of the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino were present during the announcement; President Grace Javier Alfonso, Mario Hernando and National Artist Bienvenido Lumbera, 

All is set for the night to honor and celebrate cinematic excellence, as the highly-anticipated ceremony for the 37th Gawad Urian fast approaches.

The Gawad Urian, considered the most prestigious film award-giving body in the country, which has shaped cinematic history over the years. This annual ceremony is held in light of a partnership formed between the oldest and most respected film awards institution in the country, the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino, and Cinema One, the Philippines’ number one cable channel.

This year’s awarding ceremony will be hosted by two of the country’s best local talents in entertainment, Piolo Pascual and Bianca Gonzales, along with Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino member Butch Francisco.

Piolo and Bianca will be part of an even greater population of artists in the field of filmmaking—the biggest names in Philippine cinema and stars of all generations—who will be gathering in celebration of local cinema at Studio 9 and 10 of the ELJ Building this year to witness the awards convocation.

Tight competition is expected among this year’s nominees. Most nominees are independent films or starred in one.

The 37th Gawad Urian nominations are dominated by Lav Diaz’s “Norte, Hangganan ng Kasaysayan” and Armando Bing Lao’s “Dukit” with ten nominations each. They are followed by “On The Job” and “Porno,” with nine nominations each. “Transit,” on the other hand has eight nominations this year, and both “Riddles of my Homecoming” and “Ekstra” tie for six nominations each. Also part of those raking in a number of nominations are “Badil” and “Ang Kuwento ni Mabuti,” with four nominations each.

This year’s Gawad Urian is also made more meaningful and exciting with the Natatanging Gawad Urian being conferred to film director Mike de Leon.

Catch the 37th Gawad Urian as it airs on Cinema One on the same night at 10:00pm. Encores of the awards show program will be on the weekend of June 21 and June 22.
